Flyndersø

Not far from the town of Vinderup you will find an area with magnificent nature. This area is called Flyndersø, because of the great lake in the area and reveals a historical period in Denmark. Because the place is a good example of an ablation moraine, which was often seen during the last ice age that took place in Denmark approximately 18,000 years ago. The entire Flyndersø area was covered in ice. This left large ice clumps, called dead ice. When all the ice melted many years later, kettle holes where formed. Nowadays, Flyndersø consists of numerous large kettle holes in an old bottom of a valley.

The goal of the area of Flyndersø is to establish a nature that resembles the nature of the Stone Age. For that reason, a heath has been formed, which was preserved. For the same purpose, an attempt to make grain fields in the area by drying out Flyndersø was conducted, but the idea was abandoned due to the depth of the lake.

Now, the area is an obvious place for a day in nature for the entire family. In the area, you will find many different hiking and cycling routes, so there is something for everyone. On the routes, you can experience the history of a harsh period of time combined with a unique nature, which contains the great lake, flat heath, large heather fields, oak coppice and conifer plantations.
