MHVJ - Mariager – Handest Veteranjernbane
For almost 50 years, vintage trains have driven between Mariager and Handest. The preserved railway line opened in 1970 four years after the private railway line Mariager-Faarup-Viborg Railway discontinued operations. 

Look forward to a railway journey through some of the most beautiful parts of Denmark, along inlets, through beech woods, wavy hills, river valleys, moors and market town idyll in Mariager. - A trip where your soul will be with you. - Just bring along the lunch basket and coffee and enjoy it on the train. Here it will definitely taste twice as good.

The locomotives and carriages
Get on the vintage train that is driven by one of the beautiful locomotives, and you are immediately brought back to the start and mid 1900s where the vehicles were produced. The steam locomotives, Horsens Vestbaner No. 3 (from 1928) and Vemb-Lemvig-Thyborøn Jernbane No. 7 (from 1909) and the stunning red diesel locomotive MHVJ 5 (from 1953) each tell their own unique story and let you experience how it felt taking the locomotive many years ago; "back when when grandpa was young". The carriages, which are connected to the locomotives, originate from the years 1898 to 1934. 

The line and Handest Station
Take the vintage train from Mariager to True and Handest respectively for just 70/120 kr. for adults and half price for children. Bicycles, prams and dogs can be brought along for free.

The vintage train cruise can also be combined with a trip onboard the cabin cruiser called Svanen that sails from both Hobro and Mariager Harbor, and it is a part of The Triangular Route (train, bus & boat). The triangular route offers a fantastic natural experience in Denmark's most beautiful fjord and on one of the country's most stunning preserved railway lines.

Handest Station itself is also something special and is part of the "Project Station - Unique Heritage Site". The purpose of the project is to maintain the station as a time and function-specific Danish private railway station and maintain the authentic impression of the 1930s both from within and outside. As part of implementing the project, the station was declared a building of cultural heritage by the Agency of Castles and Culture in September 2016. In Handest you can experience an original station office and environment from the time when the king was called Christian the 10th and the country's prime minister was called Stauning.

Café Jernbanekiosken
The cozy and well-decorated Café Jernbanekiosken is located in the warehouse at Handest Station. Here you can enjoy your home-brought food and enjoy cold drinks, a great cup of coffee or tea, as well as delicious cake and confectionery. - And the kids can go on a ride in the red rail bus on the model railway.

When planning your next party or gathering, then invite family, friends or colleagues on the rails in the beautiful scenery on the 17 km stretch between Mariager and Handest.
