Holger Danske

Most people associate Holger Danske with the dark casemates of Kronborg Slot, but actually, two statues of the famous mythical hero exist.

One is made of concrete and is located in the North Zealand castle, but the other is made of bronze and is found in the center of Skjern.

Here the giant has stood since 2014 when it under massive media coverage was transported from Helsingør to Western Jutland, where it had been purchased by a local businessman, which pleased the citizens of the town.

The auction sat a record
The statue was sold on an auction site called lauritz.com where it was sold for 3.2 million DKK, which was the largest amount of money a trade at lauritz.com ever had generated.

The statue weighs approx. 2,000 kg, and it is of course placed on the Holger Danske square in Skjern.

Does Holger wake up in Skjern?
Holger Danske is one of the most legendary characters in Denmark, and it is prophesized that he will wake up from his sleep if a hostile power threatens the nation.

The legendary hero was first mentioned in the 12th century, however it is not known whether he existed or not.

If the myth of him waking up, when the borders of Denmark are threatened, is true then it will probably be the statue in Skjern - and not the one in Kronborg - that will come to life, because it is actually the statue in Skjern that is the original of the two.
