Kaj Munks Præstegård

New Year's Day 1944 was not what the parish in Vedersø Church expected. When the pastor arrived, he did not wear his official gown, but instead wore his jacket and his dark red scarf. The pastor did not go to the pulpit, but stood on the church floor and said: "A deep sorrow and pain fills my mind ...". The pastor called on the community to oppose the German occupying power - in fact he called for active resistance. This "sermon" would be his last.

In 1924, a new, young pastor moved into the rectory in Vedersø, where he later met Lise whom he had 5 children with. The rectory became the pastor's base - here he wrote his sermons, but also his plays, letters and poems and it was also here he was taken prisoner by the Germans in January 1944.

Today, Kaj Munk's versatile life and activities are conveyed in the beautiful settings at the rectory. The rectory also hosts various cultural activities.

The garden and the rectory
The beautiful garden at Kaj Munk's rectory has its own history. The planting started in the 19th century, and since then each pastor has left his own personal touch - including Kaj Munk, who planted the blue anemone, which he brought back from his native soil on Lolland. Kaj Munk also established a canal so that he could sail directly from the garden to Nørresø.

Living history
Kaj Munk's rectory is part of Ringkøbing-Skjern Museum, where you can experience history right where it took place. The museum consists of a series of authentic buildings, each of which tells its own exciting story about the life that was lived here and how people and landscapes shaped that life!
