Albue Bird Decoy
This bird
decoy was established in 1880 and has been run by Fanø Hunting Association
since 1952. The association use the decoy to breed ducks. They make sure the
approx. 300 ducks are fed, and they have helped hatch at least 300 ducks a year.
Thanks to a fence, these ducks have been free to fly to and from the bird decoy
within the distance of 1,8 km without the risk of being shot.
Even though
the decoy no longer functions to catch birds, it is still partly operational,
so it is possible to have an idea of how it worked. During peak season you can
see this on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 13.30 to 17.00. Here, you’ll be
met by the Decoy Master who can tell you all about the bird decoy. It is also
possible to buy something to drink or a small bag of food for the ducks.
There are
four bird decoys on Fanø. The first were established in the middle of the
1800s. Back then the decoys were used for catching wild ducks and migratory
birds using domesticated decoy ducks. The caught ducks were then put down by
the Catch Master. Today, it is no longer legal to catch and kill these birds as
the area is protected. Some of the bird decoys are however used for ringing
birds.
All the
bird decoys on Fanø are located in scenic surroundings.
