Fiskehytterne

Not far from Nymindegab Strand you will find three small, charming, thatched fishing cabins. The fishing huts are called Esehusene and are placed at the bottom of Ringkøbing Fjord. Esehusene reveal a harsh fishing past, which you can experience. Therefore, this is an exciting excursion spot.

History

The town of Nymindegab was an attractive fishing area in 1816-1880, which is why many people fished from Nymindegab. This was because the geography looked a little different previously. In earlier times Nymindegab was the passage to the North Sea compared to nowadays where the passage exists in the town of Hvide Sande. The activity of fishing peaked in the period from the beginning of spring to late summer. During this period, farm laborers both men and women from the farms came from the country to fish. They lived in the small Esehytter during their time fishing.

The cabins were built in an A-shape, where the materials were often uneven and skewed. But back in that time the fishing was the primary focus and not the details on the houses. Esehusene are so well-preserved that they are still standing there today and are free to visit by guests visiting the area. The huts have received their names from the Danish word “ese”, which means preparation of hooks and lines and attaching bait. Therefore, the huts are called Esehusene, which shows their importance to fishing.
