Rammedige
In North West Jutland, only a few kilometres
from the foaming North Sea, lies Rammedige – an old fortification dike, probably
from the Iron Age. The dike consists of a rampart and moats with pointed poles
and functioned as the minefield of the time. It strongly resembles some of the defence
designs used by the Roman emperor Cesar.
The dike used to be 2,5 km long but today only
remnants of 400 metres remain. In 2011, 30 metres of the dike were
reconstructed using the methods believed to have been used originally.
Take a walk along the dike and speculate on
its purpose. Did they want to control trading connections at the Limfjord? Or
was it built in connection with one of the many tribal wars in Jutland during
the first centuries AD?
The dike is located in the middle of
stunning scenery and is an excellent excursion spot for anyone with even a
small interest in history or someone fancying a nice walk in the brisk sea air
and raw landscape.
