Sønderho Old Bird Decoy

This bird decoy was constructed in 1866 and is in such good condition that it definitely warrants a visit. The association Bevarelse af Sønderho Gamle Fuglekøje (Preservation of Sønderho Old Bird Decoy) has restored the bird decoy, making it easy to see how it was originally used. It has a pond, pipes, nets and traps and gives you an amazing insight into how the bird decoys were used in the old days.

Not only does the bird decoy give an interesting insight into bird catching – the surroundings themselves are also well worth a visit. The landscape is stunning, and you’ll also find an observation tower with a beautiful view of the Wadden Sea.

There are four bird decoys on Fanø. The first were established in the middle of the 1800s. Back then the decoys were used for catching wild ducks and migratory birds using domesticated decoy ducks. The caught ducks were then put down by the Catch Master. Today, it is no longer legal to catch and kill these birds as the area is protected. Some of the bird decoys are however used for ringing birds.

All the bird decoys on Fanø are located in scenic surroundings.
